Historic Sussex houses

Between the two world wars, this corner of England between Eastbourne and Brighton was a favourite spot of London’s literary Bloomsbury set (for more information, click here). At Charleston (www.charleston.org.uk; Mar–Oct Wed–Sat guided tours only 11.30am–5pm, Sun noon–5pm), an 18th-century farmhouse, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant drew the literary crowd, and their enthusiastic painting and decoration gives the house great charm. The family’s handiwork can also be seen at the nearby church at Berwick. In 1919 Vanessa Bell’s sister, the writer Virginia Woolf, and her husband Leonard bought Monk’s House (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/monks-house; Apr–Oct Wed–Sun 1–5pm), a weatherboarded building among thatched houses in Rodmell. The village lies in the meadowlands around the River Ouse, where Virginia Woolf drowned in 1941.
